CD163 is a type I transmembrane protein of 130 KD molecular weight belonging to the group B of the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich superfamily. It is involved in the clearance and endocytosis of haptoglobin-hemoglobin complexes mostly expressed by monocytes and macrophages. This scavenging role plays a critical role in its anti-inflamatory response.
